Debt Review FAQs

Answers to common questions about debt review, transfers, removals, clearance certificates, credit reports and affordability assessments.

Starting debt review

What is debt review?

Debt review is a regulated process for consumers who are over-indebted. A Debt Counsellor assesses your financial position and, where appropriate, develops a more sustainable repayment proposal.

Is the Debt Fresh assessment free?

Yes. The initial Debt Fresh debt assessment and credit-report request presented as free on this website are free of charge.

Is debt review a loan?

No. Debt review does not give you a new loan. It restructures the way qualifying existing debt is repaid through the applicable process.

Can I take new credit while under debt review?

Debt review restricts access to new credit while the process is active, subject to the applicable legal framework.

Transfers, removals and clearance

Can I transfer my debt review to Debt Fresh?

In appropriate circumstances an existing debt-review matter can be transferred to another Debt Counsellor. Debt Fresh can assess your current status and explain the transfer process.

Can Debt Fresh remove me from debt review?

Removal depends on the stage and legal status of your debt-review matter. We do not promise removal in every case. Debt Fresh can assess your position and explain the lawful options available.

What is a clearance certificate?

A clearance certificate confirms that the applicable requirements for clearance from debt review have been met. Debt Fresh can assist clients with the clearance process where the requirements are satisfied.

Credit reports and assessments

Why do you request my credit report?

Your credit report helps provide the credit side of your financial picture so that you do not have to rely only on memory when completing an assessment.

What information do I provide for an affordability assessment?

We ask for your household income and essential monthly living expenses. A Debt Counsellor reviews the assessment before the outcome is discussed with you.

How is my credit-report consent recorded?

Debt Fresh records the consent associated with your request together with a timestamp, consent wording/version and supporting request information for audit purposes.
